On the night of February 21, 2025, a tragic and senseless act of violence claimed the life of 19-year-old Rawan Mohamed Baseti, an Arab American woman from Dearborn Heights, Michigan. The fatal encounter began around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Warren Avenue and the Southfield Freeway Service Drive in Detroit. Rawan was driving her black 2018 Jeep Cherokee, with two female friends as passengers, when they were reportedly cut off by a white 2015 Chrysler 200.
In an attempt to get the
license plate number of the Chrysler, Rawan began to follow the vehicle. The pursuit continued for over two miles, eventually turning onto Cheyenne Street. It was there that the tragic road rage incident escalated to a fatal shooting. An occupant of the Chrysler exited their vehicle and fired multiple shots at Rawan's Jeep. A single bullet pierced the front windshield, striking Rawan in the head and killing her. Her two friends, who were in the vehicle with her, were not physically harmed. A nearby resident heard the gunshots and the pleas for help from Rawan's friends and immediately called 911.
In the week following the shooting, authorities arrested three suspects at a house in Detroit where the suspected vehicle was also located. However, these individuals were later released without charges due to a lack of sufficient evidence. As of the latest reports, no formal charges have been filed in the case, and the investigation remains ongoing. A substantial $20,000 reward has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest. The family of Rawan Baseti, devastated by their loss, continues to seek justice for their daughter. Her funeral was held on February 24th at the American Islamic Center, where a large crowd gathered to mourn the young life cut short.
