On a summer day in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the life of 52-year-old Rebecca Heeren was tragically cut short in a wave of violence that stunned the community. On July 7, 2011, she, along with members of her family, became victims of a shooting rampage carried out by Rodrick Shonte Dantzler.
The day unfolded in horror as Dantzler, armed with a 9mm Glock pistol, targeted two separate homes in the city.
At the Heeren residence on Brynell Court, Rebecca was killed alongside her 51-year-old husband, Thomas, their 29-year-old daughter, Jennifer, and their 12-year-old granddaughter, Kamrie Heeren-Dantzler. The motive behind the horrific acts was described by the Grand Rapids Police Chief as Dantzler 'hunting' his ex-girlfriends and their relatives. Jennifer Heeren was identified as Dantzler's estranged wife, and their daughter Kamrie was also among the deceased.
The violence did not end at the Heeren home. Dantzler also went to a house on Plainfield Avenue where he killed a former girlfriend, her sister, and her 10-year-old daughter. The deadly spree triggered a massive police response, leading to a high-speed chase through the city. Dantzler fired at officers and injured two other people before his vehicle was disabled.
The tragic chain of events concluded after Dantzler took hostages in a nearby home. Following a standoff with police that lasted for several hours, Rodrick Shonte Dantzler took his own life, bringing the rampage to a final and devastating close. In the aftermath, the community was left to mourn the seven innocent lives lost, including Rebecca Heeren, who was remembered by her husband's company as the one who 'kept her family going.'
