In March of 2016, the community of Grandville, Michigan, was shaken by the unexpected loss of Diana Gail DeYoung, a 65-year-old woman known for her compassionate spirit and dedication to helping others. Her life was tragically cut short in what police later determined to be a murder-suicide.
Diana was a beloved mother, sister, and friend. She was a dedicated servant to her community through her work with United Church Outreach Ministry.
Those who knew her remembered her as a loving and caring individual who could always lift spirits and make people smile. Her sudden absence left a void in the hearts of many who had been touched by her kindness.
Concern arose when Diana failed to show up for work for a few days. On Friday, March 25, 2016, officers from the Grand Rapids Police Department were dispatched to conduct a welfare check at a home on Franklin St. SW. Inside, they made a grim discovery. Diana DeYoung was found deceased alongside a 60-year-old man named Roberto Alfaro. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds, and a gun was recovered at the scene.
Autopsies confirmed that both individuals died from the gunshots. The evidence collected at the scene led investigators to conclude that Roberto Alfaro had shot and killed Diana before taking his own life. Neighbors of Alfaro described him as a nice, helpful man and were shocked by the violent turn of events. They indicated that he and Diana had been dating for only a few months. With the determination that the case was a murder-suicide, the investigation was concluded as no other suspects were believed to be involved.
