In the late summer of 2023, a domestic situation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, escalated into a tragedy that ended the life of 38-year-old Alicia Danielle Lofton. A mother of three, Alicia was shot and killed at her home on Union Avenue SE on the morning of August 17, 2023. The fatal incident occurred just one day after she had taken the step to formally end her turbulent marriage by serving her husband, Marcus Lofton, with divorce papers.
Their marriage had been short, lasting only about six months.
The relationship between Alicia and Marcus was fraught with conflict. Just months before the fatal shooting, in May of that year, Marcus had been arrested for domestic violence against his wife. As a condition of his bond, he was legally prohibited from having any contact with her. Despite this order, Marcus went to Alicia's home on that fateful August morning. An argument erupted between the two, a continuation of the turmoil that had plagued their brief union. A neighbor reported hearing the sounds of arguing followed by gunfire and then saw a man leaving the scene in a maroon SUV, a vehicle similar to the one Marcus drove.
When police arrived at the home, they found Alicia Lofton outside, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy would later reveal she had been shot 15 times, with wounds to her head, shoulder, and thigh. The investigation quickly led police to Marcus Lofton, who was found walking near his listed address and taken into custody. During questioning, he confessed to killing his wife. He claimed that during their argument, he grabbed her pistol from a drawer and attempted to strike her with it, causing the gun to discharge. Alicia then ran into a bedroom and locked the door. Marcus admitted to forcing the door open and, upon finding her trying to escape through a window, shooting her numerous times before fleeing.
Marcus Lofton was charged with open murder and felony firearm possession. His initial trial, which took place in May 2025, concluded with a hung jury, unable to reach a unanimous verdict. To avoid a second trial, he later accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Family members spoke at his sentencing, expressing their profound grief and anger over the loss of Alicia. On August 7, 2025, Marcus Lofton was sentenced to serve 25 to 50 years in prison for the murder of his wife, with an additional consecutive two-year sentence for the firearm charge.
