In the winter of 2021, the life of Sandra Kay Carter, a 65-year-old female resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. On the evening of January 3rd, while she was in her home on Alpine Avenue NW, an unknown individual fired gunshots into the house. Carter was struck and critically injured. She was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The Grand Rapids Police Department subsequently ruled her death a homicide.
The investigation into Sandra Kay Carter's death led authorities to a suspect named Andre Dimitre Sims. It was revealed that the motive behind the shooting was connected to Sims's search for Carter's grandson. Tragically, Carter was in the midst of cooking for her grandchildren when she answered the door and was shot. At the time of being identified as the suspect in Carter's murder, Sims was already in custody for a separate and serious crime. He was implicated in a murder-for-hire plot that had taken place in Macomb County in November 2020, for which he faced charges of attempted murder and conspiracy.
Andre Dimitre Sims was charged with open murder for the death of Sandra Kay Carter. The legal proceedings against him culminated in a conviction for first-degree murder, felony firearm, and being a felon in possession of ammunition. The jury found him guilty of killing Carter, leading to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Carter's daughter, Felicia, expressed her profound grief over the loss of her mother and her hope that Sims would remain incarcerated for the rest of his life.
