In the spring of 2017, a house party on the Southeast side of Grand Rapids, Michigan, turned tragic, ending the life of 18-year-old Kiara Carter. On the evening of March 20th, Kiara was among a group of about a dozen people at a gathering in an apartment on Kalamazoo Avenue when she was fatally shot. The young mother was struck in the head by a bullet and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her death was quickly ruled a homicide by investigators, sparking a search for the person responsible for the senseless act of violence that cut her life short.
The investigation into Kiara's death led police to a 16-year-old male named Cleo Malik Nelson. Authorities alleged that Nelson was the one who fired the rifle that killed Kiara. In the days following the shooting, details emerged suggesting a reckless and ultimately fatal act rather than a targeted killing. It was reported that during the party, Nelson was handling a rifle. Kiara had apparently asked him to unload the weapon. He removed the magazine but, tragically, a single round remained in the chamber. Nelson then pointed the gun at Kiara and fired the fatal shot.
In June 2017, Cleo Malik Nelson was arrested and charged as an adult with open murder for Kiara's death. Later, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. In October of that year, a judge sentenced him to a term of eight to 15 years in prison. During the sentencing, the judge characterized the shooting as an act of 'extremely gross negligence and carelessness,' and not an accident. It was also revealed that Nelson had a history with the juvenile justice system, with the judge noting that Nelson represented a 'failure of the juvenile system.' Members of Kiara's family were present in the courtroom, holding a framed picture of her, as the young man responsible for her death was sent to prison.
