In the early evening of an autumn day in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the life of Tracey Broyles, a 55-year-old woman, was tragically cut short. On October 24, 2024, what began with arguments and 'strong words' in the 900 block of Pastiche Drive SE escalated into a fatal shooting. Ms. Broyles was pronounced dead at the scene, while her two adult sons were also struck by gunfire and rushed to a local hospital in serious condition.
The Grand Rapids Police Department swiftly launched an
investigation into the homicide. Their inquiries led them to identify 33-year-old Keontae Moore of Wyoming, Michigan, as the alleged shooter. Witnesses at the scene were able to identify Moore, and according to police reports, the surviving victims did not see a weapon on him until he drew it and began firing. Moore was apprehended and taken into custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility.
Following his arrest, Keontae Moore was charged with open murder for the death of Tracey Broyles, along with two counts of assault with intent to murder for the injuries sustained by her sons, and additional felony weapons charges. It was revealed that Moore has multiple prior felony convictions, which legally prohibit him from possessing a firearm. Compounding the tragedy, at the time of the shooting, Moore was reportedly out on bond for a separate concealed carry charge from earlier that same month. While police have not publicly disclosed a definitive motive, they have indicated that the shooting appeared to be a targeted act rather than a random incident of violence.
