In the summer of 2011, a tragic event unfolded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, forever altering the lives of several families. On July 7th, Amanda Renee Emkens, a 27-year-old female, was killed in a violent rampage that claimed the lives of six others. The devastating chain of events was set in motion by 34-year-old Rodrick Shonte Dantzler.
The spree of violence began in the afternoon and spanned across two separate residences in the city.
At a home on Plainfield Avenue, Amanda Emkens, her 23-year-old sister Kimberlee Emkens, and Amanda's 10-year-old daughter, Marissa Lynn Emkens, were all fatally shot. Kimberlee had previously been in a relationship with Dantzler. The violence did not end there, as Dantzler then proceeded to a second home on Brynell Court where he killed his estranged wife, their 12-year-old daughter, and his wife's parents.
Following the shootings, Dantzler led police on a high-speed chase through the streets of Grand Rapids, during which he fired at officers and injured two other individuals. The pursuit ended when Dantzler's vehicle was disabled, and he took refuge in a nearby home, taking three people hostage. After several hours of negotiations with law enforcement, as he was in the process of surrendering, Rodrick Shonte Dantzler turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
As the sole perpetrator of the seven murders, Dantzler's suicide concluded the investigation. There were no further arrests or suspects identified in connection with the deaths of Amanda Emkens and the other victims. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of life. Funeral services for Amanda, Kimberlee, and Marissa Emkens were held on July 13, 2011, at St. Jude Catholic Church.
