In the spring of 2022, the life of 38-year-old Stacey Lynn Majewski, a female resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On the night of Sunday, May 1, 2022, an argument inside her home on Stonebrook Drive NE would end in fatal violence. Majewski was shot in the head and rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Monday, May 2, 2022.
The Kent County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled her death a homicide.
Living with Majewski and her two sons at the time was her 24-year-old boyfriend, Khalil Childrey. Friends of Majewski recalled that she had initially offered Childrey a place to stay to help him, but the relationship had soured, and she had asked him to leave. This request is believed to have triggered the events of that fatal evening. The argument between the couple escalated, culminating in the single gunshot that ended Majewski's life. Both of her sons were home at the time of the shooting and witnessed the horrific aftermath. One of her sons made the frantic 911 call, identifying Childrey as the person who had shot his mother.
Following the shooting, Childrey fled the home, but was apprehended by police a short distance away. A pistol believed to be the murder weapon was discovered by officers approximately 20 feet from the front door of the residence. Childrey was subsequently arrested and charged with open murder and felony firearm. He claimed to investigators that he felt 'boxed in' during the argument and that he had to defend himself.
The legal proceedings that followed brought the full story to light. During his trial, Childrey claimed that the argument had caused him to 'black out,' leading to the shooting. However, this defense was not enough to sway the jury. In March of 2024, Khalil Childrey was found guilty of first-degree murder and felony firearm charges. For his crimes, he was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole.
