On July 10, 2012, a tragic murder-suicide occurred at the RidgeCrest Health Campus in Summit Township, Michigan. The incident involved an elderly married couple, Paul Matteson, aged 89, and his wife, Mary Matteson. Mary, an 87-year-old White/Caucasian female, was a patient at the facility where she was recovering from a broken hip. At approximately 10:45 a.m., Paul Matteson entered his wife's room at the assisted living and medical care center located near Jackson, Michigan.
According to
investigators, Paul Matteson shot his wife in the head with a handgun before turning the weapon on himself. Paul was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mary Matteson survived the initial shooting and was transported to Allegiance Health hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The event shocked the local community and the staff at the health campus, which was placed on lockdown during the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
The investigation conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office indicated that the couple's declining health was a primary factor contributing to Paul Matteson's desperation. Mary had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease in addition to her recent hip injury, and neighbors reported that Paul had been struggling with the emotional and physical burden of their deteriorating conditions. Authorities concluded that Paul acted alone in the shooting, and because the sole suspect died in the commission of the act, no murder charges were filed.
Further inquiries into the couple's background revealed that financial distress may have also played a role in the tragedy. It was later reported that the Mattesons had been victims of a significant financial crime. A former financial adviser who had managed the couple's assets was investigated and accused of embezzling funds from them. Seven years after the deaths of Mary and Paul, this individual was ordered to pay restitution and was fined $80,000 in connection with the mismanagement and theft of the elderly couple's finances, adding a layer of exploitation to the heartbreaking conclusion of their lives.
