In the winter of 2014, the life of Dominique 'DJ' Nolff, a 20-year-old male student at Michigan State University, was tragically cut short. On the evening of January 31, a violent encounter unfolded at his off-campus apartment in the Cedar Village complex in East Lansing. Nolff and his roommate were confronted by a man who intended to rob them of medical marijuana and a laptop.
During the ensuing struggle, a handgun was fired.
Nolff was struck by multiple bullets and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on February 1, 2014. His roommate was also shot during the incident but survived his injuries. The assailant fled the scene, prompting an investigation by the East Lansing Police Department.
The investigation led authorities to identify Marquay McCoy, a 19-year-old from Grand Rapids, as the suspect in the fatal shooting. McCoy, who was a parole absconder at the time of the incident, was later apprehended. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Dominique Nolff.
In March 2015, Marquay McCoy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery. He admitted in court that he had gone to the apartment to commit a robbery, which escalated into a fatal altercation. The following month, McCoy was sentenced to a term of 32 to 48 years in prison for his role in the death of Dominique Nolff.
