In the quiet city of East Lansing, Michigan, the life of Michael Nana Baffour Addo, a 35-year-old Ghanaian pharmacist, was tragically cut short on May 12, 2014. A dedicated professional who had moved to the United States in 2007, Addo was working a shift at a Rite Aid pharmacy near the Frandor Shopping Center. His day took a fatal turn when a customer demanded a prescription drug without the necessary authorization.
Standing his ground, Addo refused the request, an act of professional integrity that would cost him his life. The customer, angered by the refusal, left the pharmacy only to return with a gun. He then shot Addo in the face, ending the life of a man who was remembered by loved ones for his ambition and quiet demeanor.
The senseless act of violence did not end with Addo's death. Within a mere 15 minutes, the same gunman drove to a home in East Lansing and fatally shot a second victim, Jordan Rogers. The suspect, a 34-year-old Iraqi war veteran from East Lansing, had reportedly been in a heated argument with Rogers the previous night. Following the two killings, a tense standoff ensued between the gunman and police at his duplex. After several hours, the suspect was taken into custody by law enforcement.
The investigation that followed revealed that the motive for Addo's murder was not robbery, as nothing was taken from the pharmacy. The tragic event left a deep void in the lives of his family and friends. Addo had dreamt of one day returning to his native Ghana to open his own pharmacy.
