In the midst of a festive Cinco de Mayo parade in Southwest Detroit on May 4, 2014, a sudden burst of violence cut short the life of 19-year-old Andreas “Noodles” DeJesus. The young man, a resident of Detroit, was fatally shot once in the chest during the crowded celebration, an event that had historically been a peaceful cultural gathering. The incident unfolded near the corner of Vernor and Ferdinand, transforming a scene of revelry into one of chaos and sorrow.
