In the summer of 2014, the life of 17-year-old Richard 'Ricky' Pruitt was tragically cut short in Lansing, Michigan. On the night of August 16th, Richard, a young male, was inside his family's townhouse on South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when a single gunshot, fired from outside the residence, struck him. At the time of the incident, four other people were present in the home, none of whom were injured.
Following the shooting, Richard was rushed to the hospital in critical
condition. He remained on life support for five days before succumbing to his injuries on August 21, 2014. Investigators believe the shooting was not a random act and that Richard was the intended target. His mother, Sheri Pruitt, later revealed that her son had been involved in an altercation following a rap performance the night before the shooting, which she believed may have been connected to his death.
In the immediate aftermath, police described a suspect as a Black male, approximately 5'10' with a thin build, who was seen wearing a black t-shirt, light-blue jeans, and had a black shirt covering his face. Despite this description and pleas from Richard's family for anyone with information to come forward, no arrests have ever been made in the case.
Years have passed, and the investigation into Richard Pruitt's murder has grown cold. His case is now listed among Lansing's unsolved homicides, a painful reality for his loved ones who still seek justice. The Lansing Police Department's Cold Case Unit continues to list Richard's case, holding out hope that new leads or information will one day emerge and bring closure to a family forever altered by a senseless act of violence.
