In the autumn of 2014, the life of 33-year-old Keyonus J. Mobley, a Black male from Saginaw, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of October 22, 2014, Mobley was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body in a vehicle on the city's East Side. He was rushed to a local hospital and clung to life for nearly a month before succumbing to his injuries on November 18, 2014.
The investigation into Mobley's shooting quickly revealed a chilling motive: retaliation. Mobley had recently served as a witness in a criminal case, testifying against a 17-year-old named Damien R. Marcell Bell in a robbery that had occurred in May of that year. Bell had been convicted of a lesser charge in that case and received a delayed sentence. Tragically, Mobley’s courageous act of civic duty appears to have cost him his life.
Following Mobley's death, the Saginaw County District Court issued a warrant for Bell's arrest, charging him with open murder. Bell was apprehended and stood trial for the killing. During the proceedings, a key witness, a 17-year-old girl who was with Bell at the time of the shooting, provided crucial testimony. She recounted that Bell, upon spotting Mobley, expressed his intent to harm him for testifying. The witness detailed how Bell approached Mobley's vehicle and fired a single shot, an act that would ultimately prove fatal.
In March 2015, a Saginaw County jury found Damien R. Marcell Bell guilty of first-degree, premeditated murder. He was also convicted of intimidating a witness and two felony firearms offenses. The conviction for first-degree murder carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition to the life sentence for murder, Bell received a concurrent sentence of up to 10 years for witness intimidation and a consecutive two-year sentence for the felony firearm charge.
