Michael Hampton Jr., a 33-year-old resident of San Francisco, was tragically killed on February 21, 2020. His body was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of his red Mustang, which had crashed into a fence post in the Bayview District. Hampton had been shot once through the heart, a half block away from where his car ultimately came to a stop. The incident occurred in an industrial area surrounded by warehouses and RV camps.
The San Francisco Police Department initiated an investigation immediately after the incident, canvassing the area for witnesses, evidence, and video footage.
The investigation led to the arrest of two suspects, Sarina Borg and Fasi Fotu, in late May 2020. Both individuals were living in an RV near the crime scene. The prosecution argued that video evidence showed Borg and Fotu opening the driver’s side door of Hampton’s car and shooting him in the back before fleeing the scene. The defense, however, contended that the video evidence was not as clear-cut as the prosecution claimed and suggested that another individual might have been responsible for the shooting.
The trial of Borg and Fotu highlighted the complexities of relying on video evidence, especially when witness testimonies contradicted the footage. Despite these challenges, the jury found Fasi Fotu guilty of first-degree murder in November 2022. The conviction was based on the prosecution's argument that Fotu had shot Hampton in the back after a brief verbal confrontation. Following the shooting, Hampton managed to drive a short distance before losing control of his vehicle and crashing. He was pronounced dead shortly after at San Francisco General Hospital.
The case against Borg and Fotu was marked by differing narratives from the prosecution and defense. The prosecution maintained that Fotu was the shooter and that Borg had controlled the situation, while the defense argued that the investigation had been flawed and that the real perpetrator was still at large. Despite these claims, the jury's verdict held Fotu accountable for the cold-blooded killing of Michael Hampton Jr., delivering a measure of justice for Hampton's family and sending a strong message against gun violence in the community.
