In the summer of 2015, a young man from Detroit, 19-year-old Osean Ham Lockett, vanished, leaving his family engulfed in a nightmare of uncertainty. A Black/African American male, Lockett was last seen on the evening of July 6, 2015. His mother had dropped him off near a gas station after his shift working a job boarding up vacant houses in the city.
For two agonizing months, his family and friends relentlessly searched for him, combing through abandoned buildings and desolate streets, clinging to the hope of his safe return.
The heart-wrenching discovery was made on September 5, 2015. City workers, while cleaning a storm sewer, found a body that was later identified as Osean Lockett. An autopsy by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office revealed a grim reality: the young man had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The advanced state of decomposition suggested his body had been in the sewer for a considerable time. The tragic finding confirmed the family's worst fears and transformed their desperate search into a quest for justice. The Detroit Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Lockett's death.
During the investigation, a name surfaced: Michael Ferguson. A witness came forward, claiming to have seen Ferguson, wearing a mask and brass knuckles, attack Lockett from behind. The witness alleged that Ferguson then dragged Lockett into his backyard, and shortly after, the sound of gunshots pierced the air. A subsequent search of Ferguson's residence uncovered a black mask, brass knuckles, and three loaded firearms.
Despite the witness testimony and the discovery of incriminating evidence, the path to justice took a frustrating turn for Lockett's loved ones. While Ferguson was initially charged with murder, the charge was later dropped by the state prosecutor. Instead, Ferguson pleaded guilty to a state charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, for which he received a two-year prison sentence. He was separately sentenced to 105 months in federal prison for an unrelated federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. To date, no one has been convicted for the murder of Osean Ham Lockett, leaving his family with a profound sense of unresolved justice. The investigation into his death officially remains open.
