In the fall of 2016, a domestic argument in a Macomb Township, Michigan, home escalated into a tragic and fatal event. On October 1st of that year, 38-year-old Ebony Byrom, a female, was shot and killed in her residence on Country Ridge Lane. In the moments leading up to her death, she had the presence of mind to call 911, a call that would tragically capture her final words.
During the call, she could be heard telling her husband, Hal Byrom, that he needed to leave their home to de-escalate the situation.
Despite her plea for him to 'come back another day, another time,' the argument took a violent turn. While still on the line with the dispatcher, Ebony was shot multiple times. The line then went dead. Responding to the call, Macomb County Sheriff's deputies arrived to a grim scene. They found both Ebony and her 44-year-old husband on the floor with gunshot wounds. Ebony Byrom was pronounced dead at the scene, having been shot ten times. Her husband had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his neck and was transported to the hospital. Also present in the home at the time of the shooting was Ebony's 16-year-old son from a previous relationship, who was unharmed.
The investigation into Ebony Byrom's death quickly focused on her husband as the sole suspect. Following his hospitalization, Hal Byrom was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses. He was subsequently denied bond. As his trial was set to begin in March 2018, in a surprising turn of events, Hal Byrom interrupted the court proceedings to confess to the murder of his wife. He stated that he wanted to spare both his and his wife's families the additional trauma of a trial. In April 2018, Hal Byrom was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife, Ebony Byrom.
