In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded in Muskegon, Michigan, 15-year-old Davion Lashawn Hewlett, affectionately known as 'Dae Dae,' lost his life. The male youth's death on May 1, 2017, was the result of a single gunshot wound. The tragic event occurred inside a car parked at the Northway Lanes bowling alley on Evanston Avenue.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was accidental.
Davion's older brother, 18-year-old Dareese Hewlett Jr., was handling a firearm when it discharged, striking his younger brother. After being shot, Davion managed to get out of the vehicle before collapsing. The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office described the death as 'senseless and devastating.'
Dareese Hewlett Jr. was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter, unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting and obstructing a police officer. In court, it was noted that by all accounts, the shooting was without malice or intent and that Dareese was heartbroken over his brother's death. Ultimately, he accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon. The charges of resisting and obstructing an officer were dropped as part of the agreement. He was sentenced in connection with his brother's death.
Another individual present in the car at the time of the shooting, 18-year-old Antwan Crawford, was also charged. The charges against Crawford included unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and tampering with evidence. He was accused of hiding a second gun after the shooting occurred.
