A 2013 graduate of Harper Creek High School, Kyle was working as a sales associate at TJ Maxx and was known for his love of sports, having been a talented pole vaulter who placed tenth in the state. His unexpected death on October 4, 2017, sent ripples of shock and sorrow through his community.
The circumstances surrounding Kyle's death unfolded as a fatal shooting that occurred during a planned marijuana transaction. On that evening, a 24-year-old man named Robert Amerson visited Kyle's apartment at the Arbors of Battle Creek with the intention of purchasing marijuana. An altercation ensued between the two men, which ultimately led to Kyle being shot and killed. Following the incident, Amerson turned himself in to the Battle Creek Police Department.
The investigation led to Robert Amerson being charged with felony murder and armed robbery in connection with Kyle's death. The case proceeded to trial, where the defense argued that the shooting was accidental. Amerson testified that during the drug deal, Kyle had become uneasy and pointed a gun at him. He claimed that a struggle over the firearm resulted in it accidentally discharging, causing Kyle's fatal injury.
