In the early morning hours of July 28, 2021, the life of Andre` M. Watson, a 27-year-old male Army veteran, was tragically cut short. At the Arbors of Battle Creek Apartments in Battle Creek, Michigan, a gathering had turned into a scene of violence. A confrontation erupted over loud music and partying in the parking lot, escalating to a fatal conclusion. It was during this dispute that gunshots rang out, striking Watson and his 29-year-old sister. When police arrived, they discovered Andre` Watson had succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His sister was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect, Lansing Hodges. It was revealed that more than 20 gunshots were fired during the incident by Hodges and another unidentified individual. The investigation also uncovered that a second suspect, a 24-year-old man from Battle Creek, later came forward and provided a statement to the police. He was reported to be cooperating with the investigation and was not immediately taken into custody.
Lansing Hodges was arrested and faced multiple charges, including voluntary manslaughter, felony firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His trial took place in Calhoun County Circuit Court, where witnesses recounted the heated argument that preceded the deadly gunfire. In December 2023, a jury found Hodges guilty of all charges. Due to his status as a fourth habitual offender with a prior violent felony conviction, he faced a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison. His sentencing was scheduled for February of the following year.
