A young boy's life was tragically cut short in Kalamazoo, MI, in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. Nicholas Jeffery Mitchell, a 4-year-old Black male, passed away on November 9, 2017. The devastating incident stemmed from a domestic dispute that ended in the deaths of three people.
On that Thursday morning, Nicholas Allen Mitchell, the young boy's father, went to the residence of his ex-girlfriend, Julina Gale Gibson.
It is believed that a contentious custody battle over their son led to the fatal confrontation. Nicholas Allen Mitchell shot and killed Julina Gibson and also shot their son, Nicholas Jeffery Mitchell, before taking his own life at the scene.
First responders arrived to find the two adults deceased. The young boy was discovered with critical injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. Tragically, despite all efforts to save him, Nicholas succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety conducted a thorough investigation into the deaths and concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide. The investigation confirmed that Nicholas Allen Mitchell was the sole perpetrator. Consequently, no arrests were made, and no other suspects were identified in this case. The community was left to grieve the profound loss of a mother and her young child.
