In the quiet community of Otter Lake, Michigan, the life of 45-year-old Peter Carl Brodick III was cut short on March 30, 2018. This tragic event was part of a double homicide that also claimed the life of his 55-year-old stepmother, Wendy Brodick. Both Peter and Wendy died from gunshot wounds. The grim discovery began on a Friday night when Peter Brodick Jr.'s body was found inside a home in the 9800 block of Boucher Road in Watertown Township.
The investigation intensified, and two days later, Wendy Brodick's body was located near a silo in Millington Township.
The investigation swiftly led authorities to a suspect, 36-year-old Adam Balcer of Otter Lake. Balcer was a tenant in a house owned by the Brodick family and had reportedly fallen behind on rent payments, leading to an eviction process. This dispute over finances is believed to be the motive for the murders. At the time of the killings, Balcer was listed as a parole absconder, having a prior conviction for larceny in a building in 2013, for which he had been sentenced to three years in prison.
Adam Balcer was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges. He was arraigned on 17 counts, including two charges of murder, possession of a weapon by a felon, tampering with evidence, and unlawful imprisonment. Following his arrest, Balcer was held in the Tuscola County Jail on a $2 million bond. The brutal nature of the crime and the underlying motive of a landlord-tenant dispute sent shockwaves through the Otter Lake community.
