On the evening of December 17, 2014, a dispute over money tragically cut short the life of 30-year-old Adam Abraham, a male resident of Eastpointe, Michigan. The fatal encounter occurred at a residence in St. Clair Shores, on the 22000 block of 10 Mile Road. Abraham was visiting the home of 40-year-old Gerald Kupinski when an argument escalated to violence.
During the altercation, Kupinski allegedly armed himself with a handgun and shot Abraham, inflicting wounds to his arm and chest.
Emergency services were called, and Abraham was rushed to St. John Hospital in Detroit, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The incident prompted an immediate investigation by law enforcement.
Following the shooting, Gerald Kupinski was taken into custody by the St. Clair Shores police. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, felony firearm possession, and possession of a firearm by a felon, the latter charge stemming from a prior drug-related felony conviction. Kupinski was arraigned in the 40th District Court, where his bond was set at $750,000.
The investigation into Abraham's death became more complex as it unfolded. Initially, Kupinski denied shooting Abraham. However, he later admitted to retrieving a handgun from a safe and shooting Abraham during a struggle. The case took another turn with the involvement of Kupinski's wife, Kimberly. She initially told police that she was the one who shot Abraham but later changed her story, implicating her husband. This led to her being charged with lying to police and being an accessory after the fact. The legal proceedings also saw the defense challenge the admissibility of Kimberly Kupinski's statements to the police. Ultimately, a jury acquitted Gerald Kupinski of second-degree murder, but he was found guilty of the weapons charges.
