In the spring of 2013, the Detroit community, and particularly the students and faculty of Cody High School, were rocked by the sudden and violent death of a beloved figure. Charles Knott, a 54-year-old male who had dedicated two decades to coaching the girls' basketball team, was fatally shot on the night of April 30th. The dedicated coach, who had recently retired, was a source of inspiration and a father figure to many of his students, making his untimely death all the more tragic for those
who knew him.
On that Tuesday night, Knott had just returned to his apartment complex on Petoskey Avenue, near I-96 and Joy Road on the city's west side. As he sat in his parked car, a black Jeep Cherokee reportedly pulled up and blocked his vehicle. An unidentified individual, or individuals, inside the Jeep then opened fire, unleashing a volley of shots that struck Knott multiple times, including in the back. A neighbor reported hearing approximately eight or nine gunshots. By the time police and emergency services arrived, there was nothing that could be done. Knott was pronounced dead at the scene, still inside his car.
The news of Coach Knott's murder sent shockwaves through the community he had served for so long. Grief counselors were brought to Cody High School to help students and staff cope with the devastating loss of a man described as kind, fun to be around, and a true inspiration. Many of his former players expressed their sorrow, crediting him with teaching them valuable life lessons that extended far beyond the basketball court. Parents and students alike were left bewildered, struggling to understand who would want to harm a man who had given so much to his community.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department launched an intensive investigation. They appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for this senseless act of violence. Crime Stoppers of Michigan offered a cash reward for any tips that could help solve the case. Despite these efforts and the description of the black Jeep Cherokee, no arrests were immediately made in connection with the murder. As days turned into weeks and then years, the case of Charles Knott's death grew cold, leaving his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched without answers or a sense of justice for his tragic and untimely death.
