On the night of June 22, 2024, a dedicated public servant, 30-year-old Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Reckling, was taken in a sudden and violent ambush on the streets of Detroit. A nine-year veteran of the department, Reckling was a husband and a father to three young children, with a fourth on the way. His life was cut short while he was doing the job he was committed to, protecting the community from a far-reaching criminal enterprise.
Reckling, who had recently joined the auto theft unit, was deep into an investigation of a sophisticated car theft ring that had been operating across three counties. The ring was responsible for numerous carjackings and vehicle thefts. On that fateful Saturday, Reckling was working undercover, tracking a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox that had been reported stolen earlier in the day from a waterpark in Madison Heights. As he followed the vehicle in his unmarked car through a Detroit neighborhood, the stolen Equinox came to an abrupt stop. In a coordinated and brutal attack, individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire on Deputy Reckling, striking him multiple times in the head and torso. The call of an officer down went out, and though he was rushed to a local hospital, his injuries were too severe.
The investigation that followed was intensive, involving the Detroit Police Department and Michigan State Police. It led to the arrest of three teenagers connected to the ambush and the larger auto theft ring. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Raymone Raylee Debose of Clinton Township, 18-year-old Marquis Lamar Goins of Detroit, and 18-year-old Karim Blake Moore, also of Clinton Township. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought a host of charges against the three, treating the case as a continuing criminal enterprise.
Raymone Debose, identified by prosecutors as the one who fired the fatal shots, faced the most severe charges, including murder of a peace officer. In a move that brought a measure of closure to a grieving family and community, Debose pleaded guilty to first-degree murder of a police officer and a felony firearm charge. He was sentenced to 33 to 60 years in prison. Marquis Goins and Karim Moore also faced justice for their roles in the criminal enterprise and the events of that tragic night. Goins pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 8 to 30 years for carjacking, along with concurrent sentences for other charges. Moore, who also pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 3 to 20 years in prison for conducting a criminal enterprise, with additional consecutive sentences for felony firearm and receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle. While the sentences marked the culmination of the legal battle, the profound loss of Deputy Bradley Reckling continues to be felt by his family, his colleagues, and the community he served.
