In the spring of 2018, the life of 17-year-old Marcus Milkel Flanigan was cut tragically short in Battle Creek, Michigan. A male student at Battle Creek Central High School, he was looking forward to his upcoming prom, with plans already in motion to rent a limousine with his girlfriend. At home, he was the eldest of five brothers and a significant help to his mother, Shirley Waller, who lovingly referred to him as 'my captain' for the way he would care for his younger siblings, even having
dinner cooked for them when she came in.
On the afternoon of Sunday, April 15, 2018, a shooting occurred in the vicinity of Merritt and Cherry streets in Battle Creek. Marcus was struck in the back of the neck by a gunshot. Another teenager was also wounded during this incident. Emergency services responded, and Marcus was rushed to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of his critical injuries.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Marcus Flanigan succumbed to his gunshot wound the following day, on Monday, April 16, 2018. His passing was a profound loss to his family and the Battle Creek community. The investigation into the shooting that claimed his life was initiated by the Battle Creek Police Department. However, information regarding any arrests made in connection with the homicide, or the identification of any suspects, has not been made publicly available in the ensuing years. The case of who was responsible for the death of Marcus Flanigan remains without a public resolution.
