In the early morning hours of April 16, 2024, the life of 47-year-old Clayton Holt was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting that unfolded inside a residence on Spencer Street in Battle Creek, Michigan. Holt, a male resident of the city, was discovered by Battle Creek Police officers who responded to reports of the shooting shortly before 3 a.m. Alongside Holt, a 34-year-old woman was also found at the scene with critical injuries from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, Holt was pronounced dead at the scene. The female victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the identification and apprehension of a suspect. Thomas James Knickerbocker, a 43-year-old Battle Creek man, was taken into custody a few blocks from the scene of the crime. The motive for the shooting is believed to be connected to a dispute that arose during a drug transaction.
Following his arrest, Thomas Knickerbocker was arraigned in Calhoun County District Court on multiple felony charges. These charges include open murder, assault with intent to murder, felony firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm. Given the severity of the charges and his status as a habitual offender, Knickerbocker was ordered to be held in the Calhoun County Jail without bond. His legal proceedings are ongoing, with a preliminary examination scheduled to determine if there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
