On a crisp autumn evening in October 2018, the life of 47-year-old John A. Mast, a white male from Stanwood, Michigan, was brought to an abrupt and violent end. Known affectionately by some as 'Amish John' due to his background, Mast was a local contractor and farmer, well-regarded in the community. The fatal encounter unfolded on a Saturday night, outside the Moe-Z-Inn bar in the small village of Morley.
Inside the bar, tensions had been brewing.
Another patron, 48-year-old Randall Robert Jensen of Stanwood, had reportedly consumed several cocktails and was becoming increasingly agitated and belligerent with other customers. Witnesses later recounted that Jensen, a former Mecosta County sheriff's deputy, was eventually asked to leave the establishment. He returned shortly after, brandishing a firearm and causing further alarm. It was at this point that John Mast intervened, attempting to de-escalate the situation by leading Jensen outside.
Tragically, Mast's efforts to protect others cost him his own life. Once outside the bar, he was shot multiple times by Jensen and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. In the aftermath of the shooting, Jensen fled, sparking a manhunt that concluded the following afternoon when he was arrested without incident. The community was left in shock, with many hailing Mast as a hero who had selflessly placed himself in harm's way to prevent further violence.
Randall Robert Jensen was subsequently charged with a string of felonies, including open murder. During his arraignment, he was denied bond, and the legal proceedings against him commenced. The case brought to light the devastating consequences of a volatile situation fueled by alcohol, forever altering the lives of all involved and leaving a lasting scar on the tight-knit community of Morley.
