On a cold November day in 2018, a young man's life was cut tragically short in Detroit, Michigan. Ryan Nelson, a 21-year-old Caucasian male, was visiting the city from Tennessee with his cousin, Garrett Cornwell. On November 30th, the two found themselves at the New Russell Creative Center, where a prearranged marijuana deal would quickly turn violent, ending in bloodshed and a lengthy legal battle.
The cousins had traveled to Michigan with the intention of purchasing a large quantity of
marijuana. The transaction, however, was not as it seemed. An altercation broke out during the deal, and gunshots rang out. Ryan Nelson was struck by multiple bullets and died from his injuries. His cousin, Garrett Cornwell, was also shot and seriously wounded but managed to survive the encounter. The aftermath of the shooting left a scene of chaos and a family shattered by the sudden and violent loss of a young man with aspirations of one day opening a soup kitchen.
The investigation into Ryan's death led police to 27-year-old Marcus Beri of Southfield. Beri was arrested and charged with the murder of Ryan Nelson and the attempted murder of Garrett Cornwell. The case proceeded to trial, where a dramatically different version of events unfolded. Beri's defense attorney argued that his client had acted in self-defense. The defense claimed that Nelson and Cornwell had intended to rob Beri during the drug deal and that one of them had put a gun to Beri's head. Beri, according to his lawyer, responded by shooting both men to protect his own life. The prosecution pointed out that Beri did not contact the police after the shooting and instead fled the scene with a backpack full of money.
In October 2022, a jury acquitted Marcus Beri of the murder and attempted murder charges, a verdict that brought profound grief and frustration to Ryan Nelson's family. Despite the acquittal on the most serious charges, Beri did not walk free. He was found guilty on two counts of armed robbery and two counts of felony firearm. For these crimes, he was sentenced to serve 17 to 30 years in prison. The resolution of the legal case brought a measure of justice, but for the family of Ryan Nelson, the pain of his absence remains a permanent scar.
