In a Detroit home on March 19, 2022, a verbal argument between Jamel Sandifer, a 30-year-old male, and his girlfriend, Shanitra Newson, escalated into a fatal shooting. The incident occurred in the afternoon at their shared residence on Bringard Drive. Two children, a 10-year-old boy parented by both Sandifer and Newson, and Newson's 10-month-old child, were present in the home at the time of the shooting.
Responding to a shooting report at approximately 4:11 p.m., Detroit police
officers discovered Sandifer inside the home, suffering from gunshot wounds to his wrist and the side of his body. Before being transported to the hospital, Sandifer made a 'dying declaration,' identifying the mother of his child as the person who shot him. He later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
After the shooting, Shanitra Newson, then 29 years old, fled the scene but later turned herself in to the police and was arrested. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged her with one count of second-degree murder and one count of felony firearm. Newson was arraigned and her bond was set at $250,000. As a condition of her bond, she was ordered to be placed on house arrest with a GPS tether.
