In the winter of 2018, the life of 28-year-old Donovan Barfield, a male resident of Lansing, Michigan, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter that began with a deceptive invitation. On December 14, three men, Anthony Brown, Neal Prince, and Willie Fletcher, orchestrated a dice game at Barfield's apartment with the premeditated intent of robbing him.
The gathering took a dark turn in the early morning hours when Barfield was shot multiple times, succumbing to his injuries at the scene.
After the shooting, the trio ransacked Barfield's apartment, making off with shoes, a backpack, and neck chains before they fled the scene. The grim discovery was made by Barfield's friend, Joe Woods, who returned from his girlfriend's house to find the apartment in disarray and his friend's body. Although initially hesitant to get involved, Woods ultimately reported the murder by requesting a welfare check, which brought law enforcement to the crime scene. A crucial piece of evidence in the investigation came from a camera on Woods's laptop, which had recorded the suspects as they searched the apartment. This footage proved instrumental in identifying and leading to the arrests of Brown, Prince, and Fletcher.
The legal process that followed saw charges brought against the perpetrators. Willie Lee Fletcher, who was 15 years old at the time of the murder, was charged as an adult with open murder and felony firearm charges. In October 2019, an Eaton County jury convicted 19-year-old Neal Prince for his role in the killing. His convictions included first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree felony murder, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, Donovan Barfield's mother, Betty Barfield, brought her son's ashes to the courtroom, a poignant symbol of her family's profound loss.
