Paris Cameron, a 20-year-old Black transgender woman, was killed on May 25, 2019, in a shooting at a home on Detroit's east side. The incident, which occurred around 5 a.m., also resulted in the deaths of two gay men, 21-year-old Alunte Davis and 20-year-old Timothy Blancher. Two other individuals were shot during the attack but survived.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office stated that the victims were targeted because they were members of the LGBTQ community.
The tragic event unfolded during Pride Month, a detail that Prosecutor Kym Worthy noted added 'salt into the wound.'
Devon Robinson, who was 18 at the time of the killings, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, among other charges. According to a survivor's account, he and his friends had met Robinson at a gas station, and Cameron invited him to a house party. Robinson reportedly left the party and returned later, at which point he began shooting indiscriminately.
In June 2020, Devon Robinson was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to three life terms in prison without the possibility of parole for the killings. The case drew attention to the violence faced by the LGBTQ community, particularly transgender women of color.
