In the winter of 2020, the life of a young Detroit mother, Shavon Mitchell, was tragically cut short in an act of domestic violence that rippled through her community. On the night of November 30, 2020, the 28-year-old Black female was fatally shot as she was returning home from work. Her death was the culmination of a long and harrowing history of abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child, Kevin Fox.
Shavon had been attempting to distance herself from a volatile
and abusive relationship with Fox. The couple, who had been together since high school, shared a five-year-old son. However, the relationship was marred by domestic violence, with incidents that had reportedly escalated in the months leading up to her death. Friends and family described a woman who was trying to handle the situation peacefully but ultimately could not escape the danger that loomed over her. In the period before her murder, there was a pending court case related to domestic violence allegations against Fox.
The night of the shooting, Shavon was ambushed by Fox. He shot her, ending her life in a senseless act of violence. The brutality of the crime was further compounded when Fox reportedly sent text messages to Mitchell's family, bragging about what he had done. His violent rampage did not end there. Hours later, armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, Kevin Fox drove to a Detroit police precinct and opened fire on the building and a patrol car. The officers at the precinct returned fire, and in the ensuing gunfight, Fox was shot and killed.
The tragic deaths of Shavon Mitchell and Kevin Fox left their young son without his parents. The child was placed in the care of loving family members. In the wake of her death, Shavon's family spoke out about the years of abuse she had endured and her efforts to protect herself and her son.
