In a tragic turn of events stemming from a property dispute, Catherine J. Franklin, a 37-year-old Black female, was killed on December 1, 2014, in Detroit, Michigan. The fatal incident unfolded in the Rosedale Park neighborhood, at a home that Franklin and her 72-year-old father, Howard Franklin, had recently acquired in a tax auction.
The Franklins had gone to the property with the intention of evicting the occupants.
An altercation broke out with the individuals inside the house, who were in the process of removing fixtures. The confrontation escalated into a gunfight, resulting in the deaths of both Catherine and her father.
Following the incident, 22-year-old Alonzo D. Long Jr. was arrested in connection with the shootings. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of discharge in a building, and one count of felony firearm.
Long's case went to trial, and in a subsequent legal proceeding, he was acquitted of the charges brought against him.
