In the summer of 2019, the life of 21-year-old Tyrell Antonio Pettway, a Black/African American male, was cut short in a violent encounter in Lansing, Michigan. On August 3rd, Pettway was at the Plush Hair Studio located on the 5100 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when a long-simmering dispute escalated into a fatal shooting. Responding officers found Pettway unresponsive, having been shot multiple times.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a person of interest, Demetrust Traivon Jones, who was also 21 and a resident of Lansing. Jones was initially taken into custody but was released the following day. However, as the investigation progressed, more evidence came to light. On August 27, 2019, Jones was arrested without incident and faced a slew of charges, including open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm possession. He was subsequently denied bond.
Court proceedings revealed the tragic backstory of the conflict between the two young men. The animosity stemmed from an affair Jones had with Pettway's girlfriend several years prior. This unresolved issue festered and ultimately led to a physical altercation at the barbershop on that fateful August day. The fight culminated with Jones shooting Pettway twice. Jones fled the scene but later turned himself over to the authorities, claiming he had acted in self-defense, fearing for his life.
In January 2024, the legal saga came to a close. As part of a plea agreement, Demetrust Traivon Jones pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. This plea deal set his minimum sentence at five years. A judge subsequently sentenced him to a term of five to fifteen years in prison, bringing a resolution to a case that had tragically ended one young life and irrevocably altered another.
