Jemaris Jarmel Leek Jr., a 17-year-old Black male, was still riding the momentum of a busy life in Lansing, Michigan—school, football, and the ordinary pull of family—when the night turned sudden and irreversible. In the earliest hours of June 16, 2021, Lansing police were called to the 2900 block of East Jolly Road and found him suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital, but despite the effort to save him, he died from his injuries at Sparrow Healthcare System.
