On the evening of November 9, 2020, Marvin Jamie Cortez, a 39-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot in Lansing, Michigan. The incident occurred around 7:35 p.m. in the 300 block of South Holmes Street. Responding to a call about a shooting, police officers discovered Cortez inside an enclosed porch, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Before losing consciousness, Cortez was able to identify his assailant to the officers, stating the name 'Glen.'
Despite first aid efforts at the scene and being transported to a hospital, Cortez succumbed to his injuries.
The subsequent investigation into the death of Marvin Jamie Cortez led police to identify Glen Her, a 30-year-old man from Lansing, as the primary suspect. Surveillance footage from the area showed three individuals arriving in a light-colored sedan. A woman could be heard yelling just before the gunshots, and the individuals were seen fleeing the scene shortly after. Investigators collected six shell casings from the location. Her's girlfriend, who was also Cortez's cousin, informed police that she had been arguing with Cortez and had called Her to come and pick her up.
Glen Her was later arrested and charged with murder and four felony weapons offenses in connection with Marvin Jamie Cortez's death. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Her was already in custody in another county on unrelated charges. Following the murder charge, he was transferred to Ingham County for his arraignment. During legal proceedings, court records revealed that Her claimed he acted in self-defense. He alleged that Cortez had accused him of a serious crime and was reaching for his waistband, leading Her to believe that Cortez was armed and intended to harm him.
