Francesca ‘Frankie’ Alyce Marks, a 30-year-old Black female, was fatally wounded on August 3, 2019, when a dispute over a basketball game escalated into a senseless act of violence. An innocent bystander, Marks was instinctively shielding her children from the flying bullets when she was struck.
Witnesses reported that an argument erupted following a basketball game, leading to a physical altercation. One of the men involved in the dispute left the scene, only to return shortly after and indiscriminately open fire in the crowded park. In the ensuing chaos, Marks was hit. Despite the immediate efforts of those around her, her injuries proved to be fatal.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Detroit Police Department launched an investigation and appealed to the public for assistance. A description of the suspected shooter was released: a Black male in his 20s, approximately 160 pounds, with a dark complexion and shoulder-length braids. He was reportedly seen fleeing the park after the shooting.
