Jared Alan Glenn, a 34-year-old male from Eastpointe, Michigan, lost his life following a shooting incident that occurred in the early morning hours of October 12, 2019. The tragic event took place at the Last Call Bar and Grill near 10 Mile Road and Hayes Avenue in Eastpointe. Witnesses reported that an altercation began inside the establishment and eventually spilled out into the parking lot.
Jared was not involved in the initial argument; instead, he had stepped in to assist a female friend who had fallen to the ground during the chaos.
While attempting to help his friend, Jared was struck by gunfire. He was one of six people injured when a gunman, who had been removed from the bar earlier, opened fire on the crowd in the parking lot. Jared sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries three days later on October 15, 2019. His family remembered him for his beaming smile and his generous nature, noting that he was an organ donor who continued to help others even after his passing.
The investigation led to the arrest of Lenny Jessie Whitfield, a 47-year-old man from Detroit. Whitfield was identified as the shooter who fired into the crowd after the dispute with bar security. Initially charged with assault with intent to murder, the charges against him were upgraded to first-degree premeditated murder following Jared’s death. Whitfield also faced multiple counts of felony firearm and being a felon in possession of a weapon.
In December 2020, following a bench trial in Macomb County Circuit Court, Lenny Whitfield was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, along with five counts of assault with intent to murder and several weapons charges. During the sentencing hearing on December 3, 2020, members of the Glenn family delivered emotional victim impact statements. The judge sentenced Whitfield to the mandatory penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
