In an act that began with a dispute between friends, 27-year-old Juwan McCreary of Eastpointe, Michigan, lost his life on November 20, 2021. The fatal encounter occurred when McCreary and a friend, Gregory John Strickland, became involved in an argument at a home on Firwood Avenue in Eastpointe. The disagreement, which started inside the residence, spilled outside and escalated into a physical confrontation.
The altercation took a deadly turn when Strickland, then 26 years old, pulled
out a gun and shot McCreary approximately six times. Following the shooting, Strickland placed McCreary's body in the backseat of a vehicle and drove away from the scene. He abandoned the vehicle a few blocks from St. John's Hospital and then walked to his home.
Sometime after the incident, Strickland contacted the Detroit police to report the shooting, claiming that he had acted in self-defense. He disclosed the location of the abandoned vehicle, where police subsequently discovered McCreary's body in the backseat. Strickland was arrested without incident.
Gregory John Strickland was initially charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm, and concealing the death of an individual. He was denied bond. Later, Strickland accepted a plea deal from Macomb County prosecutors and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to a prison term of 25 to 40 years, with an additional two-year sentence for the felony firearm charge. During the sentencing, McCreary's mother remembered her son as a generous individual who was dedicated to helping the homeless by gathering and distributing food to those in need.
