On the evening of September 30, 2022, 18-year-old Ty Michael Hale, a resident of Eastpointe, Michigan, was involved in a fatal encounter that began as a traffic dispute. Hale, a young father of two children, was operating a minibike near the intersection of Stricker and David Avenues when the incident occurred. Following an earlier alteration on 8 Mile Road, the situation escalated into a confrontation with the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck.
Witnesses and surveillance footage from a
nearby doorbell camera captured the moments leading up to the tragedy. The footage showed Hale riding his minibike up to the passenger side of the stopped pickup truck at the intersection. As Hale approached the vehicle, a single gunshot was fired from within the truck, striking the teenager in the chest. Hale, who was unarmed at the time of the shooting, collapsed in the street and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Police arrived at the scene to find Hale deceased and the other driver, a 60-year-old man, present. The driver was taken into custody for questioning, where he claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging he feared for his safety during the exchange. Investigators reviewed the available video evidence and witness statements to determine the sequence of events. The detective in charge noted that the incident bore the hallmarks of a "typical" road rage situation involving cutting off and brake-checking that turned deadly when the parties did not separate.
Following a review of the evidence, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office declined to issue charges against the 60-year-old driver. Prosecutors concluded that there was insufficient evidence to negate the driver's claim of self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt. The decision sparked outrage from Hale’s family and their legal representation, who argued that the shooting of an unarmed teen was unjustified and compared the legal hurdles to high-profile self-defense cases. Hale is survived by his parents and his two young children, a son and a daughter.
