In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, 57-year-old Kenny Burks was murdered in Roseville, Michigan. The incident, which also claimed the life of his sister, Cedic Fields, who was 63, unfolded in March 2022. The man responsible for their deaths was Jerel McCrary, the 32-year-old son of Burks's ex-fiancée.
The horrifying events were set in motion when McCrary sent a text message to his ex-fiancée, threatening to kill everyone she knew. Following through on his threat, he went to Cedic Fields's home where both she and her brother, Kenny Burks, were present. In a chilling act, McCrary video-called his ex-fiancée, forcing her to witness the cold-blooded murder of her mother and uncle as he shot them both.
Following the murders, a five-day jury trial was held in Macomb County Circuit Court. In April 2023, Jerel McCrary was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of felony firearm. The conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido described the violent act as a total disregard for human lives and the actions of a coward.
