It was November 19, 2019, just a day after her birthday, and an argument with 18-year-old Kevin Dixon inside a van in Warren, Michigan, was escalating to a terrifying point. The video she recorded captured Dixon as he loaded a handgun, chillingly wiping his fingerprints from a bullet and uttering threats.
He could be heard saying, 'You think I'm playing, huh?' before fatally shooting her.
After the shooting, Dixon moved India's body to the passenger seat and began driving. His erratic behavior on the road soon caught the attention of the police. When they pulled him over in nearby Eastpointe, they made the gruesome discovery of India Mackey's body in the vehicle. The video on her phone served as a powerful and haunting piece of evidence, documenting the moments that led to her tragic death. The investigation that followed revealed a history of domestic turbulence, with a prior domestic violence case against Dixon having been dismissed.
Kevin Dixon was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder. The legal proceedings that followed also implicated his mother, Nikita Dixon, who was charged with being an accessory after the fact and tampering with evidence for her role in attempting to dispose of the murder weapon. Eventually, Kevin Dixon pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of second-degree murder and was sentenced to a prison term of 20 to 35 years. His mother pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of improper possession of a firearm and was ordered to pay court fees, avoiding any jail time.
