In the summer of 2020, a young man’s life was cut short in a violent encounter on a Wednesday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Martell Deon-Daajon Phillips, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on July 15th in the vicinity of Wealthy Street and Diamond Avenue. The incident was part of a troubling spike in violence that year, marking the city's 19th homicide by the midpoint of the year, a figure that had already surpassed the total for all of 2019.
