On the evening of November 8, 2020, a domestic dispute on Detroit's East side turned fatal, claiming the life of 16-year-old Rayne Nicole Dennis. The young Black female was inside a home in the 9100 block of Beaconsfield when she was struck by a bullet fired from outside. The incident began when Matthew James Reeves IV, 22, arrived at the residence to pick up the daughter he shared with Rayne's stepsister.
An argument broke out between them, escalating to a tragic point.
During the heated exchange, Reeves allegedly went to his vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and fired into the front room window of the house. Rayne, who was inside and reportedly trying to protect her young niece from the altercation, was shot. Emergency services were called to the scene around 8:25 p.m., and upon arrival, police found Rayne with a gunshot wound. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries.
Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, Matthew James Reeves IV was apprehended and subsequently charged in connection with Rayne's death. The charges filed against him were severe, including first-degree murder, four counts of assault with intent to murder, discharge of a firearm in or at a building causing death, carrying a concealed weapon, and five counts of felony firearm. Reeves was arraigned in the 36th District Court and was remanded to jail. His probable cause conference was scheduled for late November 2020.
