In the spring of 2021, a senseless act of violence tragically cut short the life of Morgan Alexandria Jean Dawkins, an 18-year-old female from Detroit, Michigan. On the afternoon of May 19, 2021, Morgan was simply at a gas station on the city's east side with her friend, an innocent bystander to a conflict that would have devastating consequences. She was a young mother to a three-year-old daughter named Riley Simone.
An argument erupted between Timothy Charles McGhee Jr. and another man in the gas station parking lot. This dispute quickly escalated, leading McGhee to open fire. The intended target was the man he was arguing with, but the bullets sprayed across the area. Morgan and her friend were caught in the crossfire while still inside their vehicle. Both young women were struck, and despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Morgan succumbed to her injuries. Her friend survived the shooting.
The investigation into the shooting led Detroit Police to identify 22-year-old Timothy Charles McGhee Jr. as the suspected gunman. He was taken into custody, and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged him with one count of first-degree murder, six counts of assault with intent to murder, and multiple felony firearm counts.
