On a cold February morning in Detroit, the lives of a family and community were irrevocably shattered by a senseless act of violence. Ciera Bargaineer, a 24-year-old woman, was tragically killed on February 26, 2018, in a shooting that also claimed the lives of her father and a family friend. Ciera, a new mother to a two-month-old baby boy, was shot while sitting in a vehicle at a Sunoco gas station on the city's west side.
The devastating event unfolded around 8:40 a.m.
as Ciera's father, 60-year-old Raphael Hall, a beloved deacon at Citadel of Praise church, was pumping gas. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old George Anthony Davis Jr., who was the father of Ciera's infant son, approached Hall and engaged him in a brief conversation before opening fire. Davis then turned his weapon on Ciera and another passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Kristin Thomas, who was a neighbor being given a ride to work. Reports indicate that after the initial shots, Davis reloaded his weapon to ensure the victims were deceased.
Following the horrific scene at the gas station, Davis fled to a family member's home a few miles away. There, he continued his violent rampage, fatally shooting his 22-year-old cousin, Ja-Mon Thomas. The motive for the initial shooting was reportedly linked to Davis's relationship with Ciera. Family members expressed shock, stating that there had not been any prior signs of domestic abuse or violence from Davis.
After the murders, Davis led police on a high-speed chase that crossed state lines into Ohio. The pursuit ended at a truck stop where Davis, cornered by law enforcement, took his own life. The tragic end to the chase brought a close to the manhunt but did little to ease the profound grief of the families and community left to mourn the loss of four innocent lives. The investigation revealed that Davis had a history of mental illness, which may have been a contributing factor to his violent actions.
