In the early morning hours of April 19, 2026, a tragic series of events unfolded at a Sunoco gas station on the west side of Detroit, culminating in the death of 24-year-old Jasmine Sheeler. The incident, which also claimed the lives of her 25-year-old brother, Trevor Sheeler, and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Lester Owens III, stemmed from an earlier car crash and a subsequent altercation.
According to reports, the situation began after a traffic accident involving a vehicle occupied by the Sheeler siblings and Owens, and another vehicle. Following the crash, the trio pursued the other car to the gas station located at the corner of West McNichols and Lahser Roads. Surveillance footage and witness accounts indicate that upon arriving at the gas station, an argument and physical confrontation ensued between the occupants of the two vehicles.
During the altercation, a 22-year-old man, who was a passenger in the pursued vehicle, fired a weapon. Jasmine Sheeler was struck in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene. Her brother and boyfriend also sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Trevor Sheeler and Lester Owens III were transported to a local hospital where they later died from their injuries.
The 22-year-old shooter remained at the scene and cooperated with the Detroit Police Department. He was taken into custody following the incident. However, after a review of the evidence, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office declined to file charges against him. The decision was based on the determination that the shooter acted in lawful self-defense. Investigators reported that the occupants of the Sheeler vehicle were the aggressors in the confrontation.
