In the early hours of February 20, 2024, 11-year-old Lamara Glenn was sleeping on a couch during a sleepover at her aunt's home on Pennsylvania Street in Detroit, Michigan. A hail of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet as at least 23 shots were fired into the house in a drive-by shooting. Lamara was tragically struck in the head by one of the bullets. She was rushed to a local children's hospital in critical condition, where she was placed on life support.
Tragically, her injuries proved insurmountable, and after being declared brain-dead, the difficult decision was made to remove her from life support. Lamara passed away on February 26, 2024.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a group of individuals believed to be involved in a large-scale car theft ring. It was determined that a stolen vehicle was used in the commission of the crime. The house where Lamara was sleeping had been targeted before, suggesting the shooting was not a random act of violence. Authorities believe the intended target was an adult inside the home, and the shooting was retaliatory in nature.
In the days and weeks that followed, several suspects were apprehended in connection with the senseless killing. Four men were ultimately charged in Lamara's death. The alleged shooters were identified as Tahkari Turner, 18, and Nasir Lavant Garrett, 19. Also charged was Robert Lee Turner Jr., 20, who is accused of helping his brother, Tahkari, and Garrett hide the weapon used in the shooting. A fourth individual, Hershel Laneir Marian, 19, was also charged with multiple counts, including assault with intent to murder. The charges against the men were expected to be amended to include murder following Lamara's passing. The suspects faced numerous felony charges, and court proceedings were scheduled to begin.
